Gauteng is the smallest of South Africa 's nine provinces and is made up of mostly Johannesburg, Pretoria and Soweto. Johannebsurg is also known as ‘Place of Gold’ because of the goldmines which has been a huge contributor to the development of the city and country historically and to date. Johannesburg is a cosmopolitan, multicultural mix of people, from the vibrant metropolis of Soweto, through dynamic Johannesburg CBD (Central Business District) to stately Pretoria.
Johannesburg, the capital city, offers visitors a large variety of recreational, cultural and historical attractions. Due to the unique cultural and social legacy it is today a multicultural melting pot clearly seen in the many museums, theatres, galleries, cultural precincts and craft markets. Fifty kilometres from Johannesburg to the north stands Pretoria who is known for its colourful parks and trees, especially beautiful in spring when purple jacarandas cover the avenues. Although foreigners have a set impression of South Africa’s history, it did not begin with Apartheid. To understand the spirit of Johannesburg it should be known that a hundred years ago, the largest, wealthiest city in South Africa was a huddle of tents pitched on a mining ridge. Rugged settlers discovered gold on the ridge in 1886, effectively creating a crazed gold rush. The ruthless spirit of that gold rush remains fixed in the mindset of the city known today as Egoli, Zulu for gold, or just Jozi as is commonly said between residents. Johannesburg has become a booming city of business, generating a staggering forty percent of South Africa’s GDP. It is also a place of cultural diversity where mine dumps, Indian bazaars, skyscrapers and African traditional medicine shops all fit together. The landscape is punctuated by shopping malls and office blocks, divided by highways and littered with trees. Johannesburg CBD remains a tough city that had been in most part abandoned for a decade and crime spread like wildfire. Due to the strength of the economy and mineral prices Jozi is getting a make over. International investment is bringing the city back to its previous glory. Commitment has been made to make it all possible by the 2010 World Cup. Let JetSet 2010 Accommodation take care of your everyy need in Johannesburg. Contact us now!

South of Johannesburg is Soweto, a city developed as a township for black people under the apartheid system. The name Soweto is an acronym, made up - in apartheid days - from the first letters of the words “south western township. The city begins roughly 15km away from Johannesburg CBD (Central Business District). It is some 63 sq. km large and growing at a rapid rate. It is estimated three million people live in Soweto with homes ranging from extravagant mansions to makeshift shacks.. Most of the struggle against apartheid was fought in and from Soweto. The 1976 student uprising, also known as the Soweto uprising, started in Soweto and spread to the rest of the country. Soweto is a city of enterprise and cultural interaction. There are many monuments which stand testament to all the battles fought for the region. Nelson Mandela lived in Soweto before he was imprisoned and you can see the modest house from the street. Winnie Mandela’s mansion, also in Soweto is in an affluent part of Orlando West. Archbishop Desmond Tutu's house, the Sisulu Residence is also in the same neighbourhood. Interest in African traditional medicinal practice would take you to the Credo Mutwa village in Central Western Jabavu. Mutwa, an African traditional healer and fortune teller, claims to have foreseen some significant political developments.
