Port Elizabeth stands on the southern coast of South Africa nestled in a bay. It is the second largest city in terms of area, the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country. The industrial city of Port Elizabeth is the centre of the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, known as ‘settler country’. Port Elizabeth was also a city involved in the liberation struggle. Port Elizabeth is also dubbed the "Detroit of South Africa" because of its vehicle assembly plants.
Port Elizabeth is also known for its moderate all year round weather with rain. The summers are warm with a very temperate humidity level. Winters are mild and pleasant. Port Elizabeth is a huge venue for water sports including surfing, boardsailing and diving. The perfect year-round conditions make it a hit with sports people. There are a variety of locations for the Scuba diving enthusiasts boast ship wrecks, coral reefs and plentiful fish with up 30 metres visibility.

Another of Port Elizabeth’s greatest attributes are the clean beaches with warm water. The attractive beachfront is the venue for the annual ‘Splash’ festival and world boardsailing championships. For tourist walks and shopping Port Elizabeth features a long promenade and pier with shops and the like.

Port Elizabeth is considered to be the country's leading centre of Art Nouveau style architecture. Many buildings display the intricate stonework, wrought iron and stained glass of that era and are very visible in the historical areas of the city.
