Port
Elizabeth stands on the southern coast of South Africa nestled in a
bay. It is the second largest city in terms of area, the fourth largest
metropolitan area in the country. Port Elizabeth known to have a reputation
for the friendliest people in South Africa. Is the largest coastal city
between Cape Town and Durban and has the third largest port in South
Africa. The city stands apart in the country's history: as the precise
place where four thousand British settlers arrived in 1820 to become
the first permanent British settlers. On a hill above the centre of
the city stands a stone pyramid monument with an adjacent lighthouse.
The Port Elizabeth Tourist Information Centre is housed in a light house
that the late Sir Rufane Donkin, acting British Governor of the Cape
who named the new settlement after his wife, Elizabeth, who had died
in India two years' previously, and erected the pyramid in her memory
in 1861. Port Elizabeth has a host of museums, activities and cultural centres to visit including: Bayworld, Museum, Oceanarium, Snake park, Tropical House and No. 7 Castle Hill Museum.
